Overview

This is a level 9 mile walk exploring the natural beauty of  the Almondell Country Park and the industrial history of the West Lothian Shale Trail and the Union Canal, crossing  a dramatic viaduct and aqueduct spanning the River Almond valley.

The walk starts from the Almondell Country Park South car park following the tree and bush lined East Calder/Uphall Station path (part of the Shale Trail), turns east along a path and minor road past Roman Camp Cottages, Lookaboutye and Muirend and on to a short stretch of the Union Canal over a towering aqueduct.  It then leaves the canal to follow a path along the river valley leading back to the Country Park Visitor Centre, Nasmythe Bridge and back to the car park.
