This is a scenic walk from the beautiful Rutland village of Empingham. The terrain is varied, with meadowland, woodland, and hard tracks on sections of the Viking Way. You will get the chance to enjoy the panoramic views and the fresh breeze offered by Rutland Water towards the end of the walk. We have a coffee stop at the small lake which is headed by Fort Henry, a popular venue for weddings and other special occasions. We pass through the pretty villages of Exton, where we will have a lunch break, travel down the Viking Way to Whitwell, enjoy a stretch of Rutland Water, finishing back at Empingham. The route offers two variables, one of which will be chosen on the day, dependent on the weather leading up to the walk day.
There are sheep and many lambs in the meadows so this walk, at this time of year is not suitable for dogs. If you would like to bring a guide dog, you are welcome so please contact the walk leader so she can accommodate you.
Option one is 7.89 miles; option two which takes us to Tunneley Wood is 8.7 miles. The most suitable route will be chosen on the day of the walk. The ascent for option one is 526 feet and for option two it is 568 feet.
Park on the road near the White Horse pub. Please do not use the car park.
Bring a drink(s) and a packed lunch. You may need to sit on the grass for our breaks so bring something waterproof to sit on as benches are limited. There has been a lot of mud and wetness recently so walking poles and gaiters are advisable.
There are five stiles.
