This walk links the five Derbyshire villages of Hognaston, Kniveton, Bradbourne, Brassington and Carsington, each one with its distinctive church. It’s also worth noting that we will pass 5 pubs, on the route. The walk was inaugurated years before the construction of Carsington Water, and as a part of the original route is now under water, the final stretch now follows the western shore of the reservoir. It is a pleasant walk on the south dales limestone, with some interesting Dolomitic outcrops on the route (not to mention awkward stiles and bogs), and the site of an AD200 Romano-British settlement to capture our imaginations.
Meeting point is the Severn Trent, Sheepwash Car Park, accessed from the northern side of Carsington Water - near Carsington and Hopton villages. The day charge is £4.00, being the cheaper of the Carsington car parking options, and there is the possibility to pay online, within 48 hours of your visit.
Bring a packed lunch. There are toilets and cafe near the end at Carsington Water, main car park, but not elsewhere on the route.
