Overview

We will start from Marteg Bridge and enjoy a wander through the lovely Gilfach Nature Reserve. From the car park we will then climb up towards Moelfryn Hill, and across the hills passing the the hauntingly lovely Lleust-pen-rhiw - where shepherds of old used to spend summers with their sheep.  Continuing onwards we reach the Mountain Road (Rhayader to Cwmystwyth) which we walk along for a short while before picking up a by-way that joins the bridleway down the lovely Trawsnant valley below Esgair Dderw.  A shortish bit of lane walking and we will drop down to cross over the Wye and back to the cars.

Unless we have a very dry spell there is like to be water and mud! Some lane & road walking, but on the hills it is open access.  Great views on a good day.  I may have to cancel if we are cursed with low cloud/mist as route finding might be difficult.

The walk is a smidge over 9 miles with a fair bit of ascent. If anyone wants a short and not too arduous a walk, it is possible to spend time wandering around the Gilfach Reserve to enjoy the beauty, peace and potentially some wildlife. I am not including the Oak Wood, the Burial site, or the climb up Wyloer Hill in my walkl. I've added a link to the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust's map of Gilfach.

Please note that I have graded this walk as Moderate. I would grade it as Energetic due to distance and ascent, but there is no grading between Moderate and Strenuous on the Ramblers site.

There is a toilet at the Gilfach Visitor Centre.
