We walk past Hadlow Tower, or May's Folly as it is also known. It is a Grade 1 listed folly and the tallest of its kind in the United Kingdom and is 8 feet taller than Nelson's Column. It was constructed in the mid 19th Century and once formed part of a grand castle in the Romantic Gothic style, built by Walter Barton May. We then head down to the River Medway and Hartlake Bridge, which was the scene of a terrible disaster in 1853 where some 40 hop-pickers were drowned. Continuing along the riverbank, we will make our way to the village of Golden Green, before heading back to Hadlow.
