Overview

This walk begins along the Haltwhistle Burn heading south and southwest to meet up with the river South Tyne, following it's upstream journey for much of the time.  We will rub shoulders with many archaeological landmarks and features such as the Alston Arches and the delightful grade II listed buildings of the Haltwhistle railway station.  Next we head deep into rural Northumberland making for the unique and beautiful Featherstone Bridge.  From here we can see Featherstone Castle and beyond towards the hugely interesting WWII Prison of War camp, mostly now in ruin but with a fascinating story to tell.  Lunch will be taken in the car park of the Wallace Arms Pub (entry optional) it's a good pint!  The rest of the journey is along the easy but historically worthwhile route of the South Tyne Trail. A great favourite with walkers and sightseers alike.  Finally we cross the Haltwhistle Viaduct with stunning scenery up and down the river South Tyne before returning through Haltwhistle town back to the car park where a free coffee may be on offer!
