Helen’s Wild Dogs and Gin Walk – Regent’s Canal - Little Venice to Limehouse basin- Round 3!
27th April 2024 Meeting at Paddington Station, outside the Beer House – 11am
Note change of meeting place as Bakerloo Line closed this weekend!
Take the train in London and then take the underground to Paddington, from where it’s a stone’s throw to Little Venice.
Opened in 1816, Regent’s Canal was designed by architect, John Nash, and was named after flamboyant Prince Regent, later King George IV.
What makes the wander even more of a treat are the oodles of pubs, parks, and markets to dip into as you’re going along.
Highlights
Regent’s Park and London Zoo
As you walk along, you’re likely to see glimpses of the animals – the African hunting dog’s enclosure runs alongside the canal, and exotic birds can often be spotted in Snowden’s Aviary.
Shop for knick-knacks at Camden Market
It’s easy to get distracted at Camden Lock, probably one of London’s coolest neighbourhoods.
There’s a tempting international street food market where you can feast on global tasty treats from all over the planet.
We will stop here for around 60 mins for you to look and maybe grab a bite.
A detour through Islington
At Islington High Street, a couple of miles further along, we’ll leave the towpath and take a wander through Islington before re-joining the waterway. We will stop here for an short time to allow people to grab some lunch if they are still hungry, enjoy their picnic or even look at the shops.
If you didn’t grab lunch back in Camden, The Narrowboat Pub serves hearty pub grub. An added bonus is the view of the canal from the balcony - a perfect spot on a sunny day.
The last leg: King’s Cross and Victoria Park
Once we pass Victoria Park, it’s not long till we get to Limehouse, around 4.30 to 5pm. Here you can have a drink at the Cruisers Association, head home on the Uber Clipper from Canary Wharf Pier or jump on a DLR train which will connect you with wherever you’re headed in London or beyond.
Or you can decide to stay in London, walk more, have dinner, visit relatives or whatever takes your fancy!
