Overview

This is a walk to one of the most iconic features of the Kinder Scout plateau. The Downfall is an impressive place on any day, and no more so than when a strong south-westerly is blowing up the valley, blasting the falling waters skyward, back onto the plateau. In the hard winters of the past, it was, on occasion a glittering mass of ice, and a popular ice-climbing venue, an increasingly rare condition nowadays! We will ascend to the plateau via Crowden Brook; cross the centre of the plateau, to pick up the River Kinder to the downfall; and return via the western edge, and Jacob’s Ladder.

Strenuous
Distance:
15.9km / 9.9mi

Bring a packed lunch. The route may be modified subject to the weather conditions prevailing on the day. The Kinder plateau is riven with peat groughs, and is largely pathless. Crossing of this area involves the negotiation of difficult, peat-hagged terrain; hence the grading is ‘strenuous’, in recognition of this and the sustained climb onto the plateau.

Meet at the pay car park at Barber Booth, Edale valley. This is a small car park with limited space, and because of this, walkers are advised to arrive in good time. If the car park is full on the day, because there is no roadside parking, we may have to de-camp to the Edale train station car parks. The quoted walk mileage assumes this worst case parking scenario.
