Overview

This is a chance to explore the old industrial landscape around Stanhope and take in the tremendous views across the moors and the Wear valley.  The walk follows a path around the edge of the disused Ashes House quarry before taking us to the old mining site in Stanhope Dene. Climbing up to the moorland fringe, our route runs along the edge of the Park Plantation to Pityme Spring before our final descent through fields back to Stanhope.

Meet in Stanhope at the lay-by just beyond the Weardale Community Hospital on the B6278. The lay-by is on the left-hand side just before the road turns left over the bridge. Car-sharing is strongly advised! On-street parking is also available in the town, but we advise against parking at the Durham Dales Centre, where the maximum length of stay is just 4 hours.
