A chance to visit the private estate of Otley bordering Ellesmere.
We will be parking in the grounds of Otley and going for a walk of just under 4 miles, going down to walk along the canal and returning to the estate by a different entrance.
This will be followed by refreshments at the Farm cafe and visit to the gardens.
The farm shop will also be open.
The cost of £10 per person includes coffee/tea and cake and garden visit.
Payment is not required prior to the visit but Otley will need us provide a firm idea of numbers 10 days before the walk date, (some late additions could be catered for) but we ask that you confirm if you would like to come along ASAP please by text to the walk leader.
Oteley Estate comprises of farmland and gardens on the eastern side of Ellesmere. (It’s the part of the mere that you can’t usually access). It has been in the same family for the last 500 years.
In the fields Highland and Shorthorn cattle graze, with the recent addition of sheep.
Pigs are also reared.
The garden is on the edge of the Mere, with views across to Ellesmere. In May it is particularly colourful with rhododendrons and azaleas. There are interesting sculptures and architectural features, and also a walled kitchen garden.
