The route will take us quickly out of Westerham into a steep climb up onto the North Downs. When we catch our breath at the top we will be rewarded by a panorama over the yellow and green fields back to Westerham and the Greensand Ridge and glimpses beyond of the High Weald. We will continue to enjoy these views as we follow the North Downs Way westwards along the ridge before turning northwards to Knockholt where we will pause at the churchyard for our mid-morning snacks.
On leaving the church we will be treated to views of Canary Wharf in the distance over the undulating fields grazed by newly arrived lambs and ewes before we have a final climb into the picturesque village of Downe where will take our picnic lunch in the churchyard, examining the graves of Charles Darwin's family and learning of the family relationship to Josiah Wedgwood. There are also two pubs for liquid refreshment.
In the afternoon we will return to Westerham past Darwin's home, through country paths and pleasant dales before dropping down to enter Westerham through the back streets and the green, where those that wish can explore the cafes and historic centre of the town.
