Waypoints

1

START at Ye Olde Ferrie Inn. Follow path that runs to the back of the pub, along the river heading south. Footpath continues to R after hand ferry. Turn L onto lane and continue alongside river. At Biblins campsite, between toilet and footbridge, there is a lovely little waterfall known as Dropping Well. After waterfall (before bridge), take path to R.

2

Remain on footpath to car park at top of hill, where an information board tells you about the last resident of King Arthur’s Cave, Slippery Jem. Head north up lane for 10-20 metres and follow path as it turns sharply to the L. Follow this past the quarry until you see King Arthur’s Cave in the rocky outcrop to your L. The cave is a fascinating place; you can make out where Jem must have slept, ate and spent his day making slippers for the tourist trade from the skins of animals he’d trapped.

3

From the cave mouth, follow path ahead and continue on this path as it curves L. At yellow forest footpath marker, turn R (rather than ahead as the sign says). Path is less defined here. Turn L to follow path down a lovely ravine to riverside. Continue to footbridge.

4

Cross bridge over river. Continue on riverside to Royal Lodge hotel. Follow signs to Yat Rock from pub, taking a sharp right up the stairs (you can choose to leave this out, in which case skip to 5, but it is well worth the climb). From Yat Rock the views are phenomenal. The landscape looks primeval as the River Wye meanders through the valley.

5

Cross the river via the ferry – prices vary all the time but £2 in change should more than cover you. If the ferry is not running due to bad weather, head back and cross using the footbridge. Follow the riverbank path back to where you started.
