Slayley is a Northumberland village, set on a ridge, to the southeast of Hexham. There have been references to a settlement at Slaley since the time of the Norman Conquest. Slaley then became part of the Barony of Bolbec. In later centuries Scots invaders and the Border Reivers harried Slaley and towns nearby. It is a quiet place now but there is the remains of a nuclear bunker a couple of hundred yard north of St Mary’s church ( see pic 2). Blanchland is a beautiful and dramatic starting point for our walks.
