Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

To tie in with the Baldock Festival, we’ve devised a circular walk around the outskirts of Baldock and the surrounding countryside. The trail takes in two nature reserves and a variety of landscapes, including woodland, farmland and some small hills.

From Baldock station, we begin by walking through a somewhat spooky tunnel under the railway line, taking us to Ivel Springs local nature reserve. Passing through woods and over the nascent River Ivel, we’ll emerge to cross the Great North Road and follow a bridleway alongside open fields to the hamlet of Bygrave. From here we have a great view of Baldock below us as we cross fields, road and railway (via level crossing) to Clothall Common on the eastern edge of town.

At Weston Hills local nature reserve we’ll stop for a picnic lunch break. We’ll then walk through the woods to the southwest corner of town, and have the opportunity of a drink and comfort break at the George IV pub. Finally, we’ll go through horse paddocks, along part of the Greenway trail and past the historic parish church of St Mary’s before returning to our start point.

After the walk, there is a chance to visit Baldock Street Fair on the High Street, where there will be food, bars, stalls and performances.

Dogs are welcome on a lead, so long as they are able to negotiate stiles.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
