Overview

Circular led by Nigel S (Mobile No: 07793 629809). The walk begins with Guildford’s distinctive High Street, goes by the Castle and then climbs steeply to Pewley Down for views of of London’s skyline and the Surrey Hills. The North Downs Way is joined and takes us to the beautiful church of St Martha’s. A path through fine beech woods, which could display spring wild flowers, leads to a tributary of the Tillingbourne stream and the village of Albury. Picnic lunch on Blackheath SSSI, an area of lowland heath amongst heather, pines and birch trees: There is no longer a pub in Blackheath village but there may be a mobile snack bar. After lunch the route reaches Shalford, a station on the Guildford-Dorking line and a possible drop out point. The walk then joins the Wey Navigation footpath back to Guildford. Map: E145, L186.
