Overview

Starting at the main Bolton Abbey car park we briefly visit the 12th century Priory Church and ruins.

Crossing and walking along the River Wharfe climbing up through The Valley of Desolation to the Barden Moor and Barden Fell grouse moors. Panoramic views of upper Wharfedale from Simons Seat a rocky outcrop 485m above sea level.

From here we begin our decent through Lower Fell Plantation rejoining the River Wharfe to Barden Bridge continuing along the river bank via the Strid and Cavendish Pavillion.

The Valley of Desolation is an access point leading to Barden Fell. Walks on Barden Moor and Barden Fell. Dogs are not permitted on Barden Moor and Barden Fell other than on the public rights of way which cross Barden Moor. Therefore, dogs cannot go up the Valley of Desolation and to Simon's Seat.
