Wainwright is the perfect reward after a great walk exploring the best of the Peak District

Looking for a route that packs in dramatic views, peaceful woodland, riverside trails and a proper pub finish? This circular walk in the Peak District ticks every box – starting and ending at The Fox House, a classic country inn just outside Sheffield. It’s part of our Wainwright Worth the Walk series – a celebration of routes that reward every step.
This route is full of contrasts – moorland, rocky edges, ancient woodland, gentle rivers and a rushing brook. Watch our short film to see for yourself how the walk keeps changing with every mile and rewards you for seeing it through.

Easy to reach by car, bus or train, you’ll begin up on the open moorland, tracing the dramatic line of Burbage Edge and climbing up to Higger Tor, where the views stretch far across the Peak District National Park.
From here, descend from the moors into the woodland, and on to pretty Hathersage Parish Church before following the River Derwent – a great place to spot some kingfishers along the path.
After passing Grindleford station, the walk climbs through the incredible Padley Gorge – a rare example of temperate rainforest with gnarled trees, huge boulders and a rushing stream.
The final stretch crosses the wildlife-rich Longshaw Estate, home to BBC Springwatch, before the path emerges from the woods for one last highlight: a seat at The Fox House and a pint of Wainwright Gold to toast the day.
Big views, proper hills, and a rewarding pint at the end – this one’s definitely Worth the Walk.
