Lamplighters of London Evening Social

Did you know that there are over 1,000 gas lamps still in operation in London, many of them in the city's most iconic land picturesque locations, all being serviced and maintained by the last of Britain's workforce of lamplighters? 

Hike Essex is offering you an opportunity to take part in a private walking tour from Westminster to Covent Garden in the company of a genuine lamplighter, viewing these beautiful lamps and finding out about the history of gas lighting in London, which was the first city in the world to illuminate its streets in this way.

The lamplighters are full-time employees of British Gas and as such ask just £10 per head from those those attending, all of which will be donated to their chosen charity for 2026, The Care Workers' Charity.

Please note that this event can only proceed if a minimum of ten members attend, and that there is a maximum of twenty spaces on the tour. Members will be added to the list in the order in which they reply, with those responding after the tour has been filled being given the option to be added to a waiting in list in the event that others cannot attend.
 

Itinerary

• 19:50 - meet at Westminster Underground Station 
• 20:00 to 22:30 - walking tour lasting 2.5 hours, ending at Covent Garden. 
• 22:00 - quick drinks and/or return home, depending on individual travel arrangements.

Important Information

We will aim to travel in groups using public transport where possible, but cannot make arrangements until we know who is attending and where they are planning to travel from. If you are having difficulty working out your journey, please let me know and I will try to help.

All those planning to attend will be asked to pay an upfront donation of £10 per head - timescale tba. Since this is a private tour for Hike Essex, if an insufficient number of members are able to attend the event will not proceed and any payments already made will be refunded.
