Norham Village, about 7.5 miles from Berwick, on the banks of the Tweed, is located in the beautiful borders between England and Scotland. It is perfect for exploring the rich history of a turbulent past. The village is dominated by its twelfth-century castle which was in the front line of cross border conflict for over five centuries. In quieter times the castle became famous as the subject of several paintings by JMW Turner. Sir Walter Scott sent the hero of his novel “Marmion” to Norham because it was regarded as the most dangerous place in England. In the medieval period Norham was an island of County Durham as the Prince Bishops were tasked with defending the English border.
