Newcastleton, also called Copshaw Holm, is a village in the lonely valley of Liddesdale, the Scottish Borders, a few miles from the border with England, on the Liddel Water. Perhaps the most impressive historic sight is the mighty and imposing Hermitage Castle nestled away in the Liddesdale Valley, once known as "the bloodiest valley in Britain". It was at the centre of tales of the Border Reivers, the wars of Scottish independence and even a legend about a lord who was so hated he was boiled alive by his own servants!
