The Bolton Ramblers Group is a member of the Greater Manchester and High Peak Area that is part of the nationwide Ramblers Association. We work within the framework of the national organisation to protect and maintain the Public Rights of Way (PROW) within the Bolton and surrounding area.
We liaise with Bolton MBC and other community organisations to ensure the footpaths remain accessible and open to the public. The Footpath Secretary is responsible for the scrutinising all planning applications received to ensure there are no infringements of the PROW and make objections, where applicable, to safeguard the footpaths within our community.
The Bolton Group organise a small group of volunteers to carry out monthly maintenance and clearance work on the network of local footpaths. We work closely with Bolton MBC on the work to be done. Shared funding with local councils is available for improvement projects or when stiles, steps etc. fall into disrepair and need replacing.
In the past, we have been involved with the Woodland Trust, Wildlife Trust, Forestry Commission and the Cutacre development in countryside projects, and will continue to do so.
We want the public and members of the Ramblers to enjoy the countryside and so produce and advertise our led walks programmes. These walks range from short 3 to 5 miles in the local area to coach rambles that provide 5 to 12 mile walks around northern England including the Lake District, Westmorland and the Yorkshire Dales and down to North Wales and the Peak District. We participate in “back to walking” initiatives with local health authorities and senior welfare organisations.
In 2018 the Bolton Group will have been in existence for 50 years.
