Wainwright credited Whitbarrow as the most beautiful of the 56 Fells detailed in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" pictorial guide book; "beautiful it is every step of the way. It includes a traverse of the finest part of the Scar top and returns through delightful woods along the base of the cliffs...the walking is exceedingly pleasant in surroundings high above encircling valleys and amidst scenery that has no blemish. All is fair to the eye on Whitbarrow".
I can't improve on all of the above save to add this 10 mile no rush/leisurely paced (1250ft total ascent) "day out" also includes charming views over the Kent Estuary and an open level into an old drift mine for exploration if wished plus post walk refreshment at The Gilpin Bridge Inn if wished.
Bring a torch if you're going in the cave.
Walk starts at roadside parking by Gilpin Bridge Inn per enclosed details and map.
Good paths throughout with a short stony descent so bring poles if wished.
