Roseberry Topping
An 8 mile quite strenuous ramble staring from the very pretty village of Great Ayton
The ramble starts off at the village centre and we immediately head through fields of sheep and horses. Initially quite flat, we head through forest tracks and the going then gets a little tough due to steep inclines through ferns . The views to the south west are quite striking from here. A few stops to take in water we will then eventually climb to the Captain Cook monument where we get good views of the main destination of Roseberry Topping and the surrounding moorland. A ramble downhill from there only to meet another steep incline which forms into a level plateau. We can see our destination in the distance all along this track. As we approach, we again head downhill before ascending to the top. The climb to Roseberry Topping is quite arduous and tiring and takes a little time. The panoramic views from the top however, are spectacular. After a few drinks etc we then head downhill on well-worn footpaths that again are quite steep in places and takes time. On reaching the bottom we head through Newton Wood and eventually along flat countryside back to Great Ayton.
The ramble will be a challenge to most but we will take our time and ensure plenty of rest stops.
Good strong walking boots are required and as it is going to be a minimum of 23C, a double ration of water is essential.
The route is just over 8 miles. Due to the distance to the start location (Around 50mins) together with a hard climb, a short walk cannot be offered.
At the end of the walk there is a pub with a beer garden for those wishing to quench their thirst.
