West Gilling or Richmond
The moderate 8.8 mile route starts in the delightful Village of Gilling West at the St Agatha's Church. We initially head south from the village and turn right and up a gentle slope. After passing some rocky crags and alongside a few fields we then pass the very impressive Aske Hall which has the most beautiful surrounding pristine landscape affording some breathtaking views. Heading through to the side of a cornfield with well worn paths we then enter the area of the affluent golf club grounds where we need to watch out for flying golf balls! We then head further south through fields of sheep where we get our first glimpse of the majestic and imposing Richmond Castle. On reaching Richmond through a narrow walled alley we then walk downhill again and past typical Old English Yorkshire picture postcard Stone Cottages. Continuing down towards the river there is an abundance of rather posh houses to admire. A walk along the river path we encounter the "Drummer Boy" Stone. (More about this fascinating history on the walk) After lunch along the banks of the River Swale we shortly reach the ruins of Easby Abbey. A most picturesque spot indeed. Leaving the abbey area and slightly uphill we then encounter "Echo Stone". I need a volunteer to shout really loud here as one can hear the echo three times when standing on the stone.
Heading towards Low Wathcote, unfortunately the vey pretty countryside is blotted out in places with fields of solar panelling. When reaching Skeeby a gradual slope will provide us with some magnificent views. Heading downhill along good paths we turn left along the Gilling Beck to eventually reach the finish point.
There is a most excellent pub in the village serving a selection of delicious food and even more enticing beer/soft drinks if you wish.
A five mile walk will be available.
Directions: From Chester le Street, take the A1M south and head to Scotch Corner. At Scotch Corner head west along the A66. After half a mile or so turn left (Gilling West is well sign posted.) Head down hill and into the village.
