This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
Join us on the Saturday afternoon of the Easter weekend for the second of two walks today exploring the countryside around Welham Green, a large village located between Hatfield and Potters Bar, easily accessible by rail and road.
This event has been organised as an introductory walk, meaning it is particularly aimed at people new to our group or to countryside walking in general. Current members of the group are also welcome to attend. It's a relatively short walk on undemanding terrain, graded ‘Leisurely’, so should be suitable for most people in our age group. However, depending on recent weather some sections may be wet and muddy so boots or good quality walking shoes are recommended.
Keen walkers can attend both the morning and afternoon walks to complete a 10.5-mile figure of eight route, which due to total distance qualifies as ‘Moderate’ grade.
Both walks start and finish by Welham Green railway station. This afternoon walk heads west of Welham Green to North Mymms Park, taking in farmland, parkland and waterside, and includes some gentle slopes.
We’ll start by walking through the village to reach a trig pillar standing in fields to the north, marking the highest point in the local area. We then head along Dellsome Lane, a former road now cut off by the A1(M), cross the motorway by a footbridge then take a footpath across farmland to reach North Mymms Park. This is the grounds of an Elizabethan mansion which we’ll be able to see from a distance. We’ll have a break by North Mymms Church, where toilets are available if needed, then use another bridge over the motorway to reach the hamlet of Water End. From here we’ll walk past a stream which forms a source of the River Colne and in dry weather disappears into “swallow holes” in the chalk. We then return into Welham Green, where there is the option of a pub stop to finish at village local The Sibthorpe Arms.
Please bring snacks and drinks for a refreshment break along the route.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, please click 'join waitlist' then please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a circular walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
We are a Ramblers group, non-members are welcome to try us out for three free walks before joining Ramblers as a full member.
As a charity we ask that non-members consider making a voluntary donation to Ramblers until they purchase membership. We suggest £3-4 per walk. You can donate in person or online.
