The walk starts at Mitchel Troy church and climbs steadily through open fields and farmland to Trellech Ridge, then traverses woodland and varied terrain to the tiny hamlet of Penallt and its church with wonderful views down the Wye valley. Then it descends to the valley floor and follows the river to the Boat Inn for the lunch stop.
The afternoon takes us to Black Brook, beside Birchtree Well, before crossing Wyeswood Common Nature Reserve (with nice views towards Monmouth). More lanes then return us pleasantly to Mitchel Troy Common.
All in all, a delightful walk through unspoilt countryside, combining splendid views of Skirrid and the Black Mountains with the pleasures of walking along the River Wye.
