The distinct profile of Arthur's Seat dominates Edinburgh and this particular route is stunning, with a number of steep ascents and descents.
The start of our route from the John Muir Way and through the old Innocent Railway Tunnel is fairly flat before climbing steeply to the Salisbury Crags to witness glorious views across Edinburgh. We then continue to climb leaving Holyrood Park below us onto the 251m summit of Arthur's seat where you will be treated to a panorama across the city to the Firth of Forth and beyond to the Kindom of Fife. We then descend down to the peaceful village of Duddingston and its shimmering loch, pausing at the Kirk and if we have time Dr Neil's Garden, a little oasis designed by two doctors in the 1960's on the rocky slope below the kirk.
The route follows well defined tracks, stone steps, grassy footpaths and rocky paths which could be muddy and slippery when wet. Walking boots are recommended.
The nearest cafe and toilets in the winter is The Haven Cafe, 48 Niddrie Mains Rd, Edinburgh EH16 4BG which is advertised as open 9am - 6pm on a saturday. 10 minutes by car or an 18 minute walk from the Duddingston Kirk Hall car park.
There will be a stop for an alfresco lunch so don't forget to bring your own food and drink.
