This is a great walk with lots of variety. Views of Arundel, ancient woodland, open fields, and a stretch of the river Arun.
It's a reasonably flat 7 mile walk from Arundel Baptist Church, heading off through Binsted Wood and eventually returning to the start in Arundel via a two mile walk along the River Arun.
Bring a snack / picnic. We will have a short stop followed by a longer lunch break.
The first 10 minutes involves a gentle climb and a couple of well maintained stiles after which we will enjoy great views of an aspect of Arundel Cathedral that is unspoilt by it's domineering older brother .. the Castle. Shortly afterwards we enter Binsted Woods.
This is classic woodland territory, green, peaceful, ancient. You can really escape your worries here... but sadly you can't ever totally escape .... mud! Whilst it's not too bad at this time of the year I never walk here in the winter when it can become boot suckingly horrible. We will however no doubt have to tip toe through a couple of short easily managed stretches of the stuff. Don't be put off.
But do put on long trousers. As happens everywhere at this time of year... grasses suddenly grow into bushes, paths become swamped by humungous ferns. We will push on through a couple of 5 / 10 min stretches of overgrowth. If its's been raining our legs could well get soaked as a result. But on the plus side the overgrowth does not include any nettles, brambles, stingers or scratchers. We will soon dry off.
And then we walk for a little while on a quiet road until we reach Binsted Church where we will have our first break.
Cutting across open fields and farmland, and a final third stile, we arrive at the Tortington estate where we will have our lunch/picnic in the churchyard.
Leaving us with a couple of miles to walk along the bank of the River Arun to our start point In Arundel.
Be aware..... although it was fine when I did my mid August recce, parts of the riverbank can become overgrown... but never impassable
