Overview

Askham was described by AW as “Westmorland’s most attractive village”. Setting off from the car park situated at the outdoor swimming pool, we follow the River Lowther southwards towards Whale and then proceed slightly uphill towards Helton.

We then ascend steadily through fields towards some abandoned old tractors (possibly stopping for lunch) and over the stile / through the gate onto Askham Fell, where we pass the Cop Stone and proceed to the Cockpit (alternative lunch or short break).

We can then either ascend Heughscar Hill to take in the views over Ullswater or head towards Riggingleys Top and descend back to our starting point.
