Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

With autumn in full swing, this moderate-grade walk takes in the leafy sights of Ashridge, while also enjoying vast views from Ivinghoe Beacon. Plus we’ll take a stop at the famous Ashridge House, a former residence of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

The route covers woodlands, rolling hills and country tracks. Walking boots and a moderate level of fitness are recommended due to the length of the route and steep hills along the way.

We start in the village of Aldbury at the local Recreation Ground car park. Aldbury is famed as a filming location for many films and TV series including The Thursday Murder Club, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, The Avengers (the 1960s TV series) and Killing Eve. From here, we’ll walk towards Aldbury Pond and then uphill to the National Trust’s Monument Drive and Bridgewater Monument, built in 1832 to commemorate the third Duke of Bridgewater, Francis Egerton. We’ll follow Monument Drive, via a short detour through Pitstone Common all the way to Ashridge House, where we’ll explore the grounds and stop for a short coffee break at The Bakehouse.

Next, we’ll join the Golden Valley path, passing between Ashridge Golf Club and Little Gaddesden into Buckinghamshire as we head straight for Ivinghoe Beacon, site of an Iron Age hillfort. Keep an eye out for butterflies! We’ll stop for our packed lunch break here as we enjoy spectacular views across the Vale of Aylesbury and into Oxfordshire.

After lunch, we’ll follow country lanes to the village of Ivinghoe itself. Then heading back to Aldbury, we’ll join the Duncombe Terrace path back to the Bridgewater Monument, before heading back down the hill to our starting place.

After the walk, there’ll be an optional pub stop at The Greyhound Inn in Aldbury.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.
