This is a varied walk in the upper Derwent area of the Peak District, following the edge of Derwent reservoir, before ascending to the moorland to Lost Lad. From there we will follow the fine gritstone escarpment from Back Tor to Whinstone Lee Tor, before descending to the remaining houses of Derwent village and return along the banks of Ladybower.
There are toilets and cafe at the start/finish. We will meet by the cafe at Fairholmes car park. This is a pay car park (Go Park app required), and there are additional pay car parks in the lay-bys on the road in. There is no free parking that does not involve a long walk in. Network coverage is poor, so the parking authorities allow payment online, after you have left.
The group does not stop at cafes or pubs for lunch, and you should bring enough food and drinks with you to last the whole walk. We usually stop for a coffee break an hour or so into the walk, and stop for packed lunch around 1230-1300 although weather and a suitable location will affect both timings.
The walk leader has assessed this walk for the following risks, but during the walk others may become evident. You will come across, stiles, gates and other path furniture, hedges etc. You may come across road crossings, fields with crops, muddy/slippery sections, farm livestock & warning signs. You should remain stay alert and take individual responsibility
