Overview

The walk begins from Barrasford, heading over fields and following clear footpaths to Gunnerton. From there it follows the Coal Road gently uphill in the direction of Birtley, then descends towards Chipchase, finally returning to Barrasford over fields.

The walk is mainly on quiet roads and over farmland with extensive views for most of the way. There are gentle inclines and 6 stiles, some of which can be avoided. The ground is very muddy in places round field edges.

Lunch stop on the walk, tea/coffee and cake afterwards at the Errington (closes at 4pm)

Old Railway Station, Barrasford. Head north on the A68 from the Errington roundabout and after about 4 miles turn left on the A6079 towards Acomb and Hexham. After about 2 miles, turn right on a minor road (on a bend), signposted to Barrasford Quarry, then right again to pass the Barrasford Arms into the village. Take the first right towards the village hall and park politely along this road. The walk begins at the end of the road from the former railway station, now a private house.
