We shall start the walk from Beaminster Town Centre square (outside the Co-Op) and follow the River Brit to the outskirts of the town, picking up a bridleway to Mapperton over Coombe Down Hill. We skirt the grounds of Mapperton House and follow the Jubilee Trail to North Poorton before heading into Hooke Park where we pass through the grounds of the Architectural Association woodland campus. We will then walk to Hooke Court passing the old school, now an outdoor education centre. We walk out of the valley and lunch overlooking the school.
We continue the walk through Westcombe to Toller Whelme and drop down into Langdon to pick up the Hardy Way and follow the river back into Beaminster with fine view of Gerrards Hill, Lewesden Hill and Golden Cap. We return to the Town Square passing the local Palmers Brewery at the Greyhound.
There will be optional refreshments at the Ollerod post walk.
The route is mainly on bridleways and footpaths with some minor roads, there is a short section of standing water that can be avoided, and mud on some of the valley bottoms in places, so bring appropriate footwear and waterproofs.
There is a long steady ascent out of Beaminster and further ascent into Hooke Park . After lunch there is a gentle ascent to the highest point of the day on Toller Down (235m or 771 feet) with some moderate descents. There are a number of stiles to be negotiated after lunch. Please bring a packed lunch but there is option to purchase from the Co-Op if you forget.
