Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

In this walk we will explore the northernmost part of Greensand Country in east Bedfordshire, in an extended version of the Weneslawe Walk - a trail named after a medieval district including parts of Biggleswade, Potton and Sandy.

After setting off from Biggleswade station, we will traverse part of Biggleswade Common on our way to RSPB Sandy nature reserve. We will explore the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire, and climb to the remains of an Iron Age hillfort on Galley Hill.

Shortly after this climb, there will be time to eat our packed lunches, with the option to buy hot drinks or ice cream at the café as well as using the public toilets.

The walk will proceed along the edge of the old Sandy quarry, providing breathtaking views as we head towards the Sandy transmitter antenna - very prominent in the landscape and indeed visible during most of this walk.

From there we will head through Potton towards the small but interesting village of Sutton, home to the only surviving packhorse bridge in the county, dating to the 13th century! We will allow ourselves some time to visit the picturesque John O'Gaunt pub, named after the first Duke of Lancaster who held the manor of Sutton in the 14th Century.

With our thirsts quenched and our spirits revived, we walk back to our starting point, first through farmland and then through Biggleswade Kings Reach estate.

Stag Walkers is organising this walk as part of the Greensand Country Festival 2023. This is an annual festival dedicated to celebrating the remarkable countryside along the Greensand Ridge with a diverse program of events.

This walk is not suitable for dogs except for assistance dogs.

DONT NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.

Bring a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit & hand sanitiser.
