Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us for a circular walk from the centre of Hitchin, taking in the rolling farmland and woods to the south of the town and making a stop in the historic village of Ley Green. The walk contains some mild hill walking, with some relatively short steeper sections on grass tracks and footpaths.

From our meeting point at the Queen Mother Theatre, we’ll head south west out of Hitchin and into the Tatmore Hills, catching scenic views of the undulating landscape as we go. We'll work our way towards Ley Green, a small village which has been etched into the terrain since the time of the Domesday Book and retains its own character. As we pass through we'll be greeted by narrow passages and a miniature woodland grotto embedded into a tree.

In Ley Green we’ll pause for our lunches at the village recreation ground, then will have the opportunity to wash them down with a visit to The Plough. This village pub has served as an alehouse since 1846 and remains much loved by locals today, perhaps in part due to its spacious garden and pleasant views. In 2023 the pub was threatened with closure but saved by its community and refurbished in 2024.

After our refreshments, we'll begin the return leg of our route, which takes in large parts of the 'Tatmore Hills Loop' walking trail. Some of these paths have been carved into the landscape over many centuries and are lined with trees on both sides, their canopies overhead giving us the chance to embrace the autumnal foliage. Once out of the hills, we'll take in more of the local countryside as we wind our way back into Hitchin and our finish point, with the option of a post-walk drink at a local pub as a reward.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
