This walk is part of the North Wessex Downs Walking Festival 2023.
A leisurely walk from the village of Calstone Wellington along the valley of the river Marden to its source in Ranscombe Bottom. If the gates are locked we will need to cross a couple of stiles. Cherhill and Calstone Combes are National Trust nature reserves, maintained by conservation grazing. In June, there are 16 species of butterflies, plus moths and farmland birds – skylark, yellowhammer, corn bunting, stonechat – which we may be lucky enough to see. There are also chalk downland flowers. We can follow Ranscombe Bottom or venture into the side combes to look for the flowers and butterflies. We return via the River Marden which rises in Ranscombe Bottom.
