We catch the 405 bus to Coulsdon South station from where we cross the railway (some steps here over bridge) and head up onto Farthing Downs (steady climb but not steep) with its lovely views.
Coffee break (with benches and toilets but bring your own coffee!) before we cross a dry valley (descent then steep but short ascent here) to reach Netherne on the Hill.
A wander around here seeing the few original buildings left including the iconic Water Tower followed by our picnic lunch on the benches around the cricket pitch, straightforward return (with potential for some mud!) to Merstham (past several historic vents for the Merstham tunnels) where we can pick up our bus back to Redhill.
2 ascents and 2 descents (bring poles if you use them),
2 stiles,
steps to cross the railway at Coulsdon.
