A circular walk with glorious scenery all day long, we immediately descend west to the village of Curbar to follow the River Derwent north, along the Derwent Valley Highway to Grindleford and then on to Upper Padley. Heading east takes us to the cafe at Grindleford Station, where lunch will be taken at the picnic benches outside - several conveniently under cover - with toilets available on site. The challenge here will be to focus on our own packed lunches and ignore the monstrous plates of chips being served up from inside. Anyone who succumbs to temptation might find that the portion size will weigh rather heavily since the route now follows a sharp ascent through Nether Padley and Hay Wood leading to the start of Froggatt and Curbar edges, for a panoramic return to Curbar Gap, with a total of 1,300 ft. of gradual ascent across a picture-postcard landscape throughout the day.
