Walking out of car park turn left onto the road, we cross to join the varied walk along the old Derwent Railway into the woods, steady woodland climbs into field paths affording excellent views across to Chopwell and beyond. Heading through fields and wooded areas to Lintzford Mill, crossing road and joining the Red Kite Pathway. Past Highland Cattle and then climb up onto the trail towards Busty Bank. On leaving the road walking through High Spen then onto woodland with steady descent/ascent out to open park area back to the car park, crossing the A694, and dropping back onto the B6314 to the car park.
Terrain: Inclines – steady and moderate, bridleways, well-trodden tracks, forest tracks, small amount of road walking (quiet roads). Steep descent to Lintzford Mill, good path. 3 stiles, no issue with height or repair. In summary a moderate walk, of approximately 6.5 miles enjoying lovely countryside and woodland of Derwent Valley and Chopwell Woods/Rowlands Gill. First few miles overgrown, and wet, muddy in parts. Advise no shorts, gaiters if desired.
At the early part of the Chopwell Wood walk/Red Kite Trail – there is a good large seating/table area – will stop here to have hot/cold/light refreshments if desired, plus a break to enjoy the views.
Maguire’s fish and chip shop will be open if anyone wants to take the opportunity, seating areas to have lunch/takeaway back at the car park.
