This is a walk of two loops.
At the highest point in the East of England, Dunstable Downs sits 243m above sea level and commands an outstanding view of the Vale of Aylesbury. Starting from the Chilterns Gateway Centre we make our way along the ridge to the Five Knolls tumuli. We then descend to the outskirts of Dunstable to take the Drovers Way to the village of Totternhoe. A short distance out of Totternhoe we cross the Icknield Way at Well Head, a series of springs which give rise to the River Ouzel. After passing the London Gliding Club we follow a bridleway to the base of the Downs. Our route continues along the bottom of the Downs before we make a steep ascent almost back to the visitors' centre (there is the option to end the walk here).
The second loop of the walk takes us out to the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral. Entering at the South Porch, there will be opportunity to explore the nave, chancel, transepts, chapels and cloisters before we exit by the North Entrance to continue the loop back to the car park.
Parking at the Chilterns Gateway Centre is free for National Trust members (remember to bring your membership card), otherwise there is a £3.50 charge for all day parking.
For those wishing to take advantage of car sharing, meet 9.30am at the Caldecotte Inn car park off Bletcham Way, Milton Keynes, MK7 8HP. The leader will be here.
Please bring a packed lunch.
