This circuit from the ancient village of Falkland takes us initially steeply to the summit of the East Lomond, known locally as Falkland Hill. The route continues around the south side of the summit on a good track, visiting a limekiln before reaching Craigmead, where there are toilets. The next section is a bit rougher, taking a grassy moorland to visit the Maiden Castle, site of a hillfort, then reaching the woodland of the Falkland Estate. We visit two of the follies built by a former Laird of the estate before returning through the streets of Falkland.
Steep steps and grassy hillside on the Lomonds, followed by landrover tracks with one minor road crossing, where care is required. Muddy and wet sections are likely. There are one or two easy fence and stile crossings.
As this is a hillwalk, expect exposed and rough terrain. Please come prepared with good waterproof boots, warm and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves. Spare clothing should be carried, along with sufficient food and drink for a 4 to 5 hour walk.
