After crossing the River Esk by stepping stones or bridge, we climb in a southerly direction along field paths and quiet roads to Lord Chair Hill. With extensive views over the Esk valley, the route follows a path W above old quarries to Moss Brow, then S along a road to the Murkside House track. We follow track and field paths to Murk Esk Cottage, then a path W and N to join the Rail Trail below Dowson Garth. The Trail is followed N to Grosmont, and the the old Toll Road takes us back to Egton Bridge.
No cattle were encountered on the recce.
There will be a ten minute break. Please feel free to bring a drink/snack to enjoy.
There are toilets near the car park and we also pass toilets at Grosmont.
