Those of us who did this walk last summer will remember that it featured the Prickwillow Drainage Museum at the halfway point, including toilets and café. Unfortunately, on this occasion the museum will still be closed for the winter, so there will be no toilets until we reach the Swan on the River pub at Littleport, about 8½ miles from the start of the walk (and ½ mile before the end). We will still stop outside the museum to eat our packed lunches, as it's as good a spot as any.
On the plus side, the area of thistles that we had to walk through last summer, has been cut back (or has died back), and doesn't currently present any difficulty.
Meet outside the front of Ely railway station (CB7 4BS) for a 10:30 departure, and a 9-mile walk to Littleport, via Prickwillow. From Littleport you can get the train back to Cambridge, Cambridge North or Ely - wherever you started from.
If you are coming by train from Cambridge you should buy a return to Littleport, but get off at Ely. Catch the 10:03 from Cambridge, which is also the 10:07 from Cambridge North, and which gets into Ely at 10:21.
For car drivers, there is parking at Ely railway station and nearby.
The trains from Littleport back to Cambridge are at 48 minutes past the hour, and they all stop at both Ely and Cambridge North. You will likely have a choice of either the 15:48 or 16:48, depending on whether you want to stop in the pub first.
Please bring some food, a drink, waterproofs and good footwear. Compared to other routes we've walked recently, this one was not particularly muddy or waterlogged when reconnoitred in the first week of March, but I don't guarantee that will still be the case on the day.
