We commence our circular walk in Evershot starting at the village hall.
Please note start time is 9:45AM
We enter the grounds of Melbury Park passing Melbury House, where we may see herds of deer. We pass through Melbury Osmund and walk to Lewcombe where we will have a visit to the 'Fairy Church', really St James Church, first built in 1218, allegedly built where it is because fairies kept repeatedly moving the building materials to the location from the top of Castle Hill. There is an impressive round stained glass window depicting a tale of Charles Crew who died at sea in 1893.
We will pass Lewcombe Manor and walk along part of the Macmillan Way (named for the cancer charity) , which starts in Boston Lincolnshire and ends at Abbotsbury. We will reach the highest point of the walk at 731 feet in Grit Lane. We continue along open countryside to Rampisham where we will halt for lunch by the river.
After lunch we will follow at patchwork of quiet lanes and footpaths back to Evershot where we may take optional after walk refreshments at The Acorn Inn.
The ground is a mixture of quiet lanes, bridleways and footpaths some not frequently used. There are a fair number of stiles, some a little unloved and one shallow river we need to ford. So footwear wise, I'd highly recommend boots, not trail shoes. Expect mud in some sheltered areas and some moderate depth grass.
