An invigorating walk with some outstanding scenery and the chance to enjoy a picnic at Dover’s Hill, one of the Cotswold’s top beauty spots. From the Fish Hill picnic site, we set out along wooded footpaths and then join an access road, dropping quite steeply at the end, to reach the Farncombe Estate. We then contour along, passing Saintbury Church, and continue through fields before making a steep climb all the way up to the topograph on Dover’s Hill, where we will stop for our picnic and enjoy the extensive views. For the remainder of the walk, we follow the Cotswold Way on an easy and gently undulating path, much of it along a broad tree-lined avenue, all the way back to our start point.
Note: This walk is a dress rehearsal for the Evesham Walking Festival Walk (EWF15) planned for 27th June. See the weblink below for a map of the route.
Care will be needed in the woods where are lots of tree roots. Apart from this, most of the walk is on a mixture of good paths, tracks and tarmac. There are only a few stiles. The uphill is pretty steep but we will be taking it slowly and steadily, with stops where necessary. We may meet sheep, and just possibly cattle, in one or two fields.
Bring refreshments. Suitable for well-behaved dogs on leads.
Note: There are toilets at the picnic site, but these may not be open.
