We will climb gradually from Creigiau towards Pentyrch, to the bottom of The Garth, then have our first steep ascent to the summit, from where weather permitting, we should have wonderful far-reaching 360 degree views.
It is planned to have coffee when we're about half way up, in a lovely spot overlooking the Taff Valley. The Garth, at 1,007 or 307 metres, is the highest point in the Cardiff administrative area.
It is the subject of the 1995 film starring Hugh Grant. 'The Englishman who went up a Hill and came down a Mountain' ( when just topping 1,000 feet supposedly made it a mountain), but this is fiction; the 'pimple' on the summit is in fact a Bronze Age burial mound. With luck , we will meet Welsh Black cattle grazing near the summit!
We will then join the Ridgeway Walk for some distance descending through woods. We will follow it around the back of Rhiwsaeson Hill, below the hill fort at the top with its obvious earthworks, believed to be the site of the Battle of Rhiwsaeson in 873 AD, although some experts claim it is much older.
We will also walk for a while on the newly- developed Penrhys Pilgrmage Way, leading from Llandaff Cathedral to the Holy Well and Shrine of Our Lady in Penrhys.
We will then pass through Groes Faen, before arriving back in Creigiau at about 4pm.
Fields, footpaths, woods. A very short section on a quiet lane and another on a busy A-road with a pavement.
Mud likely in a few places.
