Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us on #GetOutsideDay for a choice of two walks from Baldock - or combine these into one long walk and spend the day with us.

If you’re new to the group, this morning walk is especially suitable for you; at just under 4.5 miles, it will take only a couple of hours and will pass through a variety of landscapes - so it’s a great taster for walking with Stag Walkers! The route is fairly flat and visits a nature reserve, a country park and a local beauty spot, taking in woodland, farmland and waterside.

After meeting at Baldock station, we’ll walk under the railway through a spooky tunnel, a portal between the town and the nature reserve of Ivel Springs. We’ll pass the springhead where the River Ivel has its source before leaving the reserve (we’ll be back again later) and walking across the motorway bridge, heading towards Nortonbury Farm. An undulating path takes us past horse paddocks before we join the Garden City Greenway trail at Radwell Meadows Country Park. We then turn through a small wood and make our way to picturesque Radwell Lake, where we’ll pause for a snack and watch the bird life on the water.

Next we’ll pass the small 14th-century church at Radwell and join the Kingfisher Way following the River Ivel back to Baldock. This trail takes us through farmland and paddocks and on to Ivel Springs. On our return to the nature reserve (after climbing over or ducking under a high stile) we’ll walk through woodland and across a wildflower meadow before returning through the tunnel to Baldock.

Those staying for the longer walk in the afternoon (see separate event for details and booking) can refuel with a lunch break at an open space opposite the station. Please bring a packed lunch and something to sit on.

Today’s walks are part of #GetOutsideDay, founded by Ordnance Survey to help people to explore and enjoy the benefits of getting outdoors.

And it will be the 100th Ramblers walk planned and led by Stag Walkers chair Al, who loves to encourage people to get outside walking!

Dogs are welcome, on a lead.
