Overview

A walk up the lovely Glenderaterra valley between Skiddaw and Blencathra, followed by stunning views from Latrigg viewpoint.

This is a valley walk. Some of the route is easy and flat, while some paths are rocky and uneven in places. There is some climb, mainly at the beginning of the day, but the ascents are not steep. We’ll be out for around 6 hours, but we won’t rush and there will be plenty of time to take in the landscape.

We start with a short walk up the track to the Blencathra Centre. We then walk up the east side of the Glenderaterra valley above the beck, past waterfalls. We gradually gain height, and cross to the west side of the valley at the bridge after an hour or so. We follow the Cumbria Way down the west side of the valley, until we arrive at the back of Latrigg. It’s a very short climb to the viewpoint, and well worth if for the views over Keswick and Derwentwater. We then walk down the east side of Latrigg, and follow the route of the old railway line back to Threlkeld.

We’ll stop for a short break in the morning, and for 20 mins or so for lunch at around 12-1. Plus coffee and cake at the end at the café in Threlkeld if we finish in time!

Wear walking boots, bring a spare warm layer and waterproof jacket and trousers, water and a packed lunch.
