After a short walk from Guildford Station, we go along the river Wey for about 1km before leaving the river path to ascend to the ancient monument of St Catherine’s Chapel (14c), depicted by the artist JMW Turner. The steady ascent continues past the grounds of Brabhoeuf Manor and the police HQ, to join a track mainly across open countryside, fields, paddocks and the grounds of Loseley House & Park, to Compton to visit the ornate Watts Chapel. After a picnic lunch at Watt’s Gallery Café (hourly bus to Guildford), we return along the North Downs Way, before descending to the river Wey and retracing our steps to the station. Mainly gentle ups and downs apart from St Catherine’s Hill at start/finish. Some fenced narrow paths that could become muddy, short stretches of woodland, 14 steps up an earth bank. Moderate walk requiring hiking footwear. Finish c15:30.
