This walk visits three rocky little tops in a quiet area at the NW end of the Llŷn Peninsular, Gyrn Goch, Gyrn Ddu and Bwlch Mawr. The walk is on a mix of good paths and tracks, rough grassland and faint sheep-trails. It includes one, steep and prolonged climb over rough grass, which will be taken very slowly.
We start on a pleasant path through woodland before joining a grassy track above the edge of forestry. Soon we turn to climb steeply up beside a wall, zig-zagging as the hillside steepens until we reach the jumble of rocks which marks the 492 metre summit of Gyrn Goch. The views of the nearby craggy tops of Yr Eifl and Tre’r Ceiri are spectacular. With the hard work behind us, we continue to Gyrn Ddu, turning to skirt below its craggy top before making an easy descent to a grassy track in the broad valley below. The track rises gently for some distance until we turn alongside a wall and head for the top of Bwlch Mawr (509 metres). Our descent over rough grass is guided by a quad-bike track, until we eventually join a bridleway which takes us down to Clynnog-Fawr.
